Logging in as a volunteer, and keeping your details safe

Why Barry asks for a 6-digit code, how to set it up, and what to do if you're stuck.

Barry is the system your event uses to manage volunteers. It holds your personal details, such as your contact details, your emergency contact and your application answers, so your login is protected in two ways: your password, and a 6-digit code from an app on your phone.

Why a 6-digit code?

A password on its own can be guessed, reused from another site, or tricked out of you by a fake email. The 6-digit code changes every 30 seconds and only appears on your phone, so someone who has your password still can't get into your account. This is called two-factor login.

If you log in with Continue with Google, Barry doesn't ask for a code, because your Google account handles that step.

Your first login

  1. Open the link your event's volunteer team sent you, and choose a password. If it's the Set up your account page, type the email address you applied with and select Email me a link. Then open the Reset your password email, select Continue and choose your password. Or go to Volunteer Login and select Continue with Google.
  2. If you used a password, Barry shows Set up two-factor login. Install an authenticator app on your phone if you don't have one, for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password or Authy.
  3. In the app, add a new account and scan the QR code on the screen. It appears in your app as Barry Volunteers, with your email address.
  4. Type the 6-digit code your app shows, then select Confirm and continue.

After that, each time you log in with your password, Barry shows Verify it's you. Open your authenticator app, find Barry Volunteers, and type the 6-digit code.

Your emergency contact

Every volunteer needs an emergency contact: their name, their phone number and how they're related to you. If any of these is missing after you've signed your agreement, Barry asks for them before anything else opens. If your date of birth is missing too, both are on the same page. Fill everything in and select Save and continue. You can change them later in My Details, but you can't leave any of them blank.

Make it easier with a password manager

A password manager app remembers your passwords and fills them in for you, so you can use a strong password without having to remember it. You may already have one: Apple Passwords on iPhone, iPad and Mac, or Google Password Manager in Chrome and on Android. Some, including Apple Passwords and 1Password, can also hold your 6-digit codes and fill them in too.

If you're stuck

Code not accepted? If Barry says That code didn't work, use the newest code, because codes change every 30 seconds. If it still doesn't work, make sure your phone's date and time are set to update automatically (in Settings, under Date & Time). The codes rely on your phone's clock being exactly right.

Can't find your code? You set up an authenticator the first time you logged in. Check each authenticator app on your phone for Barry Volunteers, or an entry with your email address. On an iPhone, also check the Passwords app. If you scanned the QR code with your iPhone's camera, your code may have been saved there instead of in an authenticator app. If you've lost your phone or deleted the app, contact your event's volunteer team and ask them to reset your two-factor login. The next time you log in, Barry will help you set it up again.

Forgot your password? Select Forgot your password? on the Volunteer Login page and follow the email.
